During a stay in Wroclaw in 2009/10 Peter Kreibich analysed the city of Wroclaw’s current visual appearance through the eyes of a visitor. The Focus of this work is on contrasts in architecture and usage of public space, caused by the different philosophies of several social systems and their consequences for the urban structure of Wroclaw. 20 years after the disbanding of the eastern bloc, restored gothic buildings meet buildings made from prefabricated slabs of the seventies, huge advertising panels and new shiny commercial buildings meet neglected tenement houses from the turn of the century. A transportation system, built as prestige object as a sign of socialist strength cuts the old town. And in between buildings of a new Polish architecture are being erected.
Each single picture points on an highlight of these contrasts, as well as the series as a whole shows the impression of Wroclaw that Peter Kreibich had during his visit.The city is transforming, a new identity is being formed. Polish tradition, German and Soviet influences and the challenge to exist in an
economically globalised world are melting. Which direction will it take? What about the citizens of Wroclaw? What will happen after the end of
grants from European Union? Will Wroclaw be able to fulfill the needs of its inhabitants? The series tries to be a starting point, to think about
the future of urban development.
The exhibition is accompanied by a presentation of quotations from an interview project, which accrued in advance the photo work. Ten inhabitants of Wroclaw spoke about the city, Poland and life in general. The interviews were originally hold in English and German. For this exhibition quotations were taken out and rearranged to a text collage and translated to Polish.
